2.6 Table Development
An introduction to this tool is covered in the video for Example 2: Visualize a Selection Harvest
If you do not have any tree data to import, this tool will allow you to build a distribution of trees from scratch. There are two parts to this process: a) determine the species composition, b) determine the tree size distribution.
Determine Species Composition
Fill out the pie graph by manually adding each species:
- Select a species from the dropdown
- Use the left/right buttons to set the proportion of this species
- Continue to add species and adjust the proportions in order to create the desired species composition
- [Optional] Click Fill Remaining to uniformly fill in the rest of the pie graph
- Click Build Stand to move to the next step
OR
Start with a default set of models based on region:
- Click the button with the state codes to select a state
- Click the button with the region names to select a region
- Remove, add, or adjust species using the dropdown and the left/right buttons
- [Optional] Click Fill Remaining to uniformly fill in the rest of the pie graph
- Click Build Stand to move to the next step
*Note: These species sets are very rough approximation based utilizing a very limited number of tree models and species. The species distribution will look nice visually, but do not expect the species to be a realistic reflection of particular place.
Determine Tree Size Distribution
This bar graph is used to determine the number of trees per acre that will be placed on the ground for each DBH class. The x axis shows DBH class and the y axis shows trees per acre.
- Select a preset for the shape of the distribution: an "inverse J" distribution for a Natural stand or a "bell" distribution for a Planted stand. This selection will also determine whether trees will be placed using a semi-random method or a grid-like method.
- Adjust the scale and shape of the preset distribution by clicking the green arrow buttons. You can click the middle button to change the speed of the adjustments.
- For a Planted distribution, set the total trees per acre using the dropdown under the buttons. For the Natural distribution, trees per acre is determined using the green arrow buttons.
- [Optional] Click Remember Graph if you would like to temporarily save this distribution. This allows you to make changes, place some trees, then click "Revert Graph" to return to the saved distribution.
- Customize the shape of the distribution by marking parts of the graph for removal. Starting from the left of the graph and left click one bar, then another bar. The area above your clicks will turn red. Continue with the left click to mark more of the graph. Additionally, you can right click a bar to mark everything to the right of the click.
- Click Remove Selected to remove the red area from the distribution.
- Check the Summary Table to see inventory metrics for the trees that you are about to place.
- Use the Structure dropdown to assign the trees to a structure.
- Adjust the Distribution slider.
- [Optional] Determine the placement area using the Polygon Panel and the Inside/Outside controls.
- Click Preview Positions, then make adjustments as needed
- Click Place Vegetation
